About
Ville Lähteenmäki (b.1998 in Jyväskylä, Finland) is a unique voice on the Nordic jazz scene. Although fluent on many instruments of the woodwind family, he considers the bass clarinet to be his main instrument. Influenced by musicians such as John Coltrane, Pharoah Sanders and Alice Coltrane, Lähteenmäki's music is creative, touching and exciting, and he is known for his powerful, expressive and distinctive approach on the bass clarinet. At this moment his most active projects are the critically acclaimed finnish-norwegian band 'Ville Lähteenmäki Trio' and the solo project 'Ville Lähteenmäki Solo.' Currently Lähteenmäki is living in Trondheim, Norway, where he actively collaborates with some of Norway's top musicians.
''Lähteenmäki is a brilliant bass clarinetist, who uses the instrument for everything it was created for. And with a bluesy tone, which reminds of Albert Ayler's alto saxophone playing and Eric Dolphy at its best. Here the roots go back to the 60s, but with the future right in front of the eyes. ’’

''His raucous, ruggedly braying style makes him a notable addition to the Dolphy-Murray-Mahall lineage that produces maximum excitement with every outpour of notes.''
-Kevin Le Gendre, Jazzwise
''Ville brings a vibrancy to the instrument we're not sure we've ever heard before.''
